About the Work
Terra Formars is a dark science fiction horror manga series written by Yu Sasuga and illustrated by Ken-ichi Tachibana. Set in the 26th century, the narrative begins centuries after 21st-century scientists seeded Mars with algae and cockroaches to warm up the planet's atmosphere. When an expedition team lands on Mars to inspect the results, they discover horrifying monsters.
The cockroaches have hyper-evolved into terrifying, humanoid creatures with overwhelming physical strength and an innate hatred for human beings. To combat these 'Terraformars' and retrieve samples of a lethal alien virus currently ravaging Earth, humanity sends specialized expeditionary crews trained in biological modification. Crew members undergo 'Mosaic Organ Surgery', combining human DNA with that of powerful Earth organisms.
Armed with the lethal characteristics of insects, arachnids, and marine life, the international crew battles endlessly against waves of mutated Terraformars. The conflict tests not only their physical endurance but also exposes political conspiracies and secret rivalries among Earth's competing superpowers. Every encounter is a frantic struggle for survival where victory demands immense sacrifice.
Serialized in Miracle Jump and Weekly Young Jump since 2011, Terra Formars gained massive acclaim for its fast-paced action and biological lore. The meticulous illustration of animal fighting tactics paired with intense suspense cemented its reputation. It has inspired anime series, OVA releases, and a live-action film adaptation.
