About
The Elusive Samurai is an acclaimed historical adventure manga written and illustrated by Yusei Matsui, creator of Assassination Classroom. Set in 1333 during the tumultuous transition between the Kamakura shogunate and the Kenmu Restoration, the story chronicles the survival and rebellion of Hojo Tokiyuki, the young heir to the shogunate.
When Ashikaga Takauji betrays the Hojo clan and overthrows Kamakura, Tokiyuki loses his family and home in a single tragic day. Saved by Suwa Yorishige, a Shinto priest claiming prophetic vision, Tokiyuki escapes into hiding. While lacking offensive martial skills, Tokiyuki possesses superhuman agility, reflexes, and an unprecedented talent for fleeing danger.
Under Yorishige's guidance, Tokiyuki gathers a cadre of loyal young allies known as the Elusive Warriors. Together, they employ guerrilla tactics, deception, and Tokiyuki's extraordinary elusive abilities to challenge the formidable forces of the Ashikaga regime and work toward restoring his lineage.
Matsui blends rigorous historical research with dark humor, whimsical character design, and intense samurai battles. By reframing retreat as a legitimate tactical discipline, the manga offers a fresh perspective on Japanese feudal history and the endurance of human spirit.
