About this series

Crescent Moon and a Cat (Mikazuki to Neko) is a human drama manga written and illustrated by Ami Uozumi, serialized in Shueisha's women's manga magazine Cocohana. Winner of the inaugural anan Cat Manga Award, it depicts unconventional living arrangements centered around warmth and emotional healing.

Set in Kumamoto City, the narrative brings together three single individuals of varying ages and backgrounds: Tokonatsu, a bookstore employee in her 40s; Kanoko, a soul-searching woman in her 30s; and Kei, an interior design specialist in his 20s. Though bound neither by marriage nor blood, they share a house along with their rescued cats.

Each housemate carries quiet vulnerabilities regarding career uncertainty, romantic expectations, and societal pressure. Through shared home-cooked meals, late-night conversations, and caring for their feline companions, they construct an alternative space of emotional safety and mutual acceptance.

Drawing inspiration from the author's own experience during the Kumamoto earthquakes, the manga offers a compassionate look at modern alternative families. It was adapted into a major live-action feature film in 2024.
