About the Series
Gantz, created by Hiroya Oku, is a pioneer of dark, visceral adult sci-fi manga. The story begins when high school student Kei Kurono and his childhood friend Masaru Kato are hit and killed by a subway train while trying to save a homeless man who fell onto the tracks.
Instead of dying, they awake in a unfurnished Tokyo apartment room dominated by a mysterious black sphere known as 'Gantz'. Along with other recently deceased individuals, they are informed that their former lives are over, and their new existence belongs entirely to the sphere.
Gantz equips them with futuristic black skin-tight suits and lethal high-tech weaponry, transporting them into hidden night missions across Japan to hunt down monstrous alien beings living disguised among humans. Survival earns points, with 100 points offering a choice to regain freedom or revive fallen comrades.
Renowned for its unfiltered realism, terrifying creature designs, and raw exploration of human selfishness and heroism under extreme pressure, Gantz remains an absolute cult landmark in modern manga.
