About this series
Puppet Master Sakon, originally titled Karakuri Zoushi Ayatsuri Sakon in Japan, is an acclaimed mystery manga created by writer Maro Sharaku and legendary artist Takeshi Obata (Death Note, Bakuman). The series originally debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump.
The story centers on Sakon Tachibana, a shy young puppeteer descended from a prestigious line of Bunraku masters. Accompanying him is Ukon, a century-old Meiji-era wooden puppet whom Sakon operates using uncanny ventriloquism.
While Sakon is quiet and reserved, Ukon speaks with a bold, witty personality, serving as Sakon's investigative alter ego. Together, the pair travels across Japan, stumbling into murder mysteries deeply rooted in ancient traditions, family feuds, and psychological motives.
Takeshi Obata's gothic and meticulously detailed art elevates the eerie atmosphere of each murder scene. The series remains a cornerstone of 1990s Shonen Jump mystery manga and inspired a hit anime television adaptation.
