About the Series

Ran and Aoi (originally titled Ran to Aoi) is a captivating historical shojo manga created by the acclaimed manga artist Rinko Ueda. Set against the turbulent backdrop of early 17th-century Japan as the Warring States period transitions into the Edo era, the story begins when Hattori Ran, a highly skilled kunoichi (female ninja), escapes her own wedding ceremony. Driven by a desire to live meaningfully through her skills rather than settling down, Ran embarks on a dangerous path.

During her escape, Ran encounters Aoi, a handsome young noble living under constant threat of assassination inside the Edo Castle grounds. Aoi is actually Tokugawa Iemitsu, the young heir destined to become the third Shogun, whose own birth mother seeks his demise due to court factionalism. Moved by his isolated plight and raw determination, Ran vows to become his secret bodyguard and loyal protector.

As dangerous political conspiracies unfold around them, Ran and Aoi face life-or-death trials that deepen their emotional bond far beyond that of master and servant. Ran's agile martial prowess protects Aoi from lethal ninja assassins sent by rival political factions. Meanwhile, Aoi finds solace in Ran's fierce authenticity, and Ran learns to open her heart to Aoi’s unyielding vision of peace.

Rinko Ueda’s mastery of historical romance shines through her intricate period attire, dynamic action choreography, and intense emotional storytelling. The manga skillfully weaves real Japanese history with high-stakes romance and swordplay action. It stands as a compelling epic for fans of drama, history, and noble devotion.
